Narcos + Latino/Hispanic Representation: Learner Response

• ·        Nice intro- A nervous starts but outlines issue and text appropriately.
• ·        A little too much reading from the slide- far too much text! But decent research and it’s a compelling story that engages the audience the audience.
• ·         Too much narrative-not enough discussion of the media content issues/debates.
• ·         Section on representation/stereotype is good –solid stereotypes outlined and negative stereotypes of men is interesting… arguably close to black stereotypes.
• ·         Media representation of crime is also interesting – with some excellent statistics. This is good research!
• ·         Presentation ends a little quickly – would love to see much more debate on why the media may represents authorities in this way and wider social/political content.
• ·         Q+A – brilliant opening question on audience pleasures + reinforcing. Answer is weak despite audience helping out. Does warm up to a little discussion but clearly more research required.
• ·         Question on glamorising violence and drugs are brilliant – but again the answer is also weak although with the help we get to an interesting media debate on media on violence in the media.

EBI:  Too much time on the narrative of Narcos should have gone onto the debate of my critical investigation.

My media text will help me go in depth into my media debate due to the fact that my media text showcases the historical stereotypes of Latino’s and Hispanic people. My presentation will allow me to import my research into my critical investigation.

Media Text: MARCOS (2015 – present)
 

• Netflix takes on the infamous Medellin drug cartel in "Narcos," which follows the rise and fall of Colombian kingpin Pablo Escobar and the Drug Enforcement Agency agents hunting him. The story is told largely from the points of view of Escobar, played by Brazilian actor Wagner Moura
• The story is told largely from the points of view of Escobar. 
• The Netflix original series has running for 2 seasons

Pablo Escobar

• Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria was a Colombian drug lord and trafficker. His cartel, at the height of his career, supplied an estimated 80% of the cocaine smuggled into the United States, turning over US $21.9 billion a year in personal income.
• Born: December 1, 1949, Rionegro, Colombia
• Died: December 2, 1993, Medellín, Colombia

Los PEPES

• was a short-lived vigilante group composed of enemies of drug lord Pablo Escobar. They waged a small-scale war against Escobar's Medellín Cartel in the early 1990s, which ended in 1993 with Escobar's death.
• the name suggested that all, or most, members of Los Pepes were previously persecuted by Escobar, most likely only a handful of the group's members had suffered at the hands of the notorious drug kingpin. Many members were allegedly rival drug traffickers. Los Pepes were allegedly funded by the rival Cali Cartel, the Castaño Brothers as well as other unknown persons or groups, including CIA.
• There are reports that Los Pepes had ties to some members of the Colombian National Police, especially the Search Bloc(Bloque de Búsqueda), with whom they exchanged information in order to execute their activities against Escobar. According to documents released to the public by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in 2008, "Colombian National Police director general Miguel Antonio Gómez Padilla said 'that he had directed a senior CNP intelligence officer to maintain contact with Fidel Castaño, paramilitary leader of Los Pepes, for the purposes of intelligence collection.

         Media Representation 

•         Latino men bring represented in a negative light due to the fact that Columbia drug lords ethnicity is south american. Narcos reinforces the stereotypes of Latino men through out the series for example Pablo Escobar reinforces the stereotype that Latino men are bad and absent dads due the fact he is absent throughout the second season.

• Sex education should be much more comprehensive and begin much earlier. In some cases, pupils are having sex before they are taught about it. In the Netherlands there are lessons for children as young as four – but, equally importantly, they talk about values, ethics and reciprocal respect.

The impact of Google

1) Why has Google led to the decline of the newspaper industry?

The decline in print media especially the newspaper has been widely debated as the industry faces competition from online websites such as google. This is the case due to the value of this company. Google have invested so much money into advertising revenue.

It says that it was 2012 where we have seen the steepest decline in newspaper advertising revenue.

4) Do you personally think Google is to blame for newspapers closing and journalists losing their jobs? Why?

I don't personally believe that it is google is exactly to blame due to the fact the print media is becoming a dying media. Its due to the fact that we are in a world where digital media is dominating the media. This is the case as it is instant people could receive instant news from social media sites such as twitter and Facebook.

Google has forced journalistic outlets to innovate and search for new ways of doing things. It has made information dissemination more efficient. While at times that has been bad for the average journalist trying to make a buck, from a big picture perspective, it has been good for helping people get access to information, and that includes journalism."
